OVERCOMING INACTION: THE ONE THING HOLDING YOU BACK
In a world that feels more unpredictable than ever, it’s easy to feel powerless. The constant noise, the expectations, the sheer volume of decisions we need to make—it can all be overwhelming. But while we can’t control everything happening around us, we can control how we show up, how we think, and how we take action. If you’ve been feeling stuck, uncertain or you're playing small, it’s time to shift your mindset and step into your personal power.
Years ago I found myself in a situation where I was fully aware I was in a marriage that wasn’t working anymore, it was very broken. The trouble was that I had been with that person for such a long time. I had been in this safe haven called marriage for such a long time that, despite the unexplainable pain I was feeling through heartache and loss, I could have stayed in that situation for years, not through wanting to stay, but fearful of leaving because I didn’t know (or want to realise) what that could look like.
I was in limbo, that grey area, should I stay and inflict further pain and uncertainty, or should I face my fear and embrace a world of uncertainty and potential loneliness? It took more energy and courage than I have ever had to muster to take action and eventually embrace the latter. I’m truly grateful to my thirty something self for doing that.
Don’t get me wrong, making the decision to walk away, it wasn’t easy but nothing hard in life ever is, as Public Enemy said ‘If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Harder than you think is a wonderful thing.’
That day I stood up for Andrea. I had no idea who Andrea was at that point, she had left a long time ago and it would be a long time before I saw her again. Here’s how I began that journey and hopefully, you can too.
1. RecogniSe the Fear Holding You Back
The psychology behind inaction is complex but familiar. It often stems from fear—fear of failure, fear of success, fear of judgment. Our brains are wired to seek safety, and stepping into new territory feels risky. We create subconscious barriers that justify our hesitation: "I’ll start when I have more experience," "I’ll speak up when I feel more confident," "I’ll make a move when the timing is right."
When we wait for the perfect time, we hand over our power to circumstances—most of which are beyond our control. Opportunities pass, momentum fades, and confidence never gets the chance to grow. Fear becomes the default driver, and we settle for a version of life that's smaller than what we're capable of.
The truth? There is no perfect time. The only way forward is to take action despite the fear.
Waiting keeps you safe. Action sets you free.
2. Reframe Your Narrative
To step into power, we must rewrite the stories we tell ourselves. That starts with unlearning everything you know about yourself up to now. A big task but totally worth it. Start to question why you believe what you believe, did someone tell you that? Were you influenced by parental beliefs or were they shaped by society or your surrounding environment?
When you start to think differently based on your own wants and needs, you create space to redefine what’s true for you.
Instead of "I’m not ready," try "I am capable, I can do this and I will grow through action." Instead of waiting for confidence to appear, recognise that confidence is built through doing. Instead of letting exhaustion dictate your limits, prioritise energy management and self-compassion (this was something that took me a long time to prioritise and recognise the importance of boundaries).
Change starts with mindset shifts, but transformation happens through movement—one decision, one action, one courageous step at a time.
3. Take One Bold Action Today
Recognise that inaction is a choice, just as action is. Identify one area where you’ve been holding yourself back and take a small, deliberate step today. Challenge the thoughts that keep you stuck, reframe your fears, and lean into momentum. The change you seek begins with you.
